We are arriving in Beijing on the Diamond Princess and switching cabins for the Beijing to Anchorage cruise.  From what I've heard the traffic into Beijing from the port is horrible and will be especially bad on May 1 due to a national holiday.  My DW wants to see the Great Wall but we've learned that the Princess excursion takes you to a rebuilt Great Wall, not exactly the original Great Wall.  The other excursion I expect to be offered is to the Forbidden City.  Travel movies suggest that you can't go inside much of anything there, just peek in.  With this in mind it appears that our choice will be Great Wall.

Check that.  Since the great wall on the excursion is a replica my dear wife is now leaning to visit the Forbidden City.  Either way I'm thinking of bringing a mask to filter out the heavily poluted Beijing air.

Hi All:

We are getting on board in Bangkok.  We are going to solve the Beijing problem by flying into PEK before the cruise for about 4 days, then 4 days  precruise in Bangkok before boarding the ship on the 15th.  We have found a highly recommended guide on TA and are in the process of finalizing the arrangements.  It is costing the two of us only about $1500, including flights, guide and hotel for the 4 days in Beijing, which we think is well worth the cost to have 3 full days there.  Our guide is taking us to one of the original wall sites, most of the major attractions, shopping, night entertainment, a Peking Duck dinner at one of the highest rated spots in Beijing, and is also providing airport transport from/to the airport.  It is too good a deal to miss, considering the distances we are having to travel to get over there anyway.

If your schedule permits, this may be an option.

Travel friends are doing the Beijing to Vancouver cruise, but since I have already done the beginning of that cruise, I am meeting up with them in Anchorage for the last week of the cruise.  I am very much looking forward to seeing my friend's & we will again be back on the Diamond Princess.  She is a beautiful ship.
