Princess has put in place a new policy of closing the dining rooms on all ships at lunch on nearly all port days.  What do you think about this new Princess policy?   Huh

Lets face facts, it would be a nice option to have it stay open even if only a few people were to use it but how can a cruise line keep spending money on things that are only utilized by a small percentage of their cruising population and expect to turn a profit. I would hate to think that they would have to raise the base price of the trips in order to satisfy the few that do use it.
I also thing it might improve the service for the buffet since there will be more personal available.
(although there's nothing wrong with the service now)

As far as the food quality of the buffet goes I see little wrong with it but then again I'm not that hard to please and although I don't like all the dished offered, there's always something I can find that's very good.

The problem with some people is that they're paying a decent price for the cruises & demand unreasonable perfection in every aspect of their trip. It's time for some complainers to look elsewhere for their next vacation.

I am not happy with decision to close MDR - lunch on Port days.  We pay a LOT of money (often $200 pp per day) to go on these ships and all the facilities inc MDR should be available at all times.  If they are worried about staffing/cleanup, just operate with half the MDR and limited wait staff.  What about pax on B2B cruises, a lot of them like to stay on the ship on turnaround/port days and relax in the MDR for luncheon.

The HC even on Port days is often busy. Thus two feeding zones are needed. Angry

Just my 2 cents worth.

In the Caribbean we're seldom off the ship for the whole day since we've been to all the islands many times. We'll just get off the ship for a hour or so & get back to the ships pool. When the Horizon opens at 11:30AM for lunch the place is EMPTY & doesn't begin to fill up till mid afternoon.

I tend to agree with NWSP. I think it is more pleasant to eat lunch in the MDR than in HC and if a few people prefer to do that then let them without needing to have a full waiting staff. Whilst it may not seem to be a big issue for most passengers it does make a difference for others who find it more relaxing to use the MDR at lunch.

It's not only the reduced wait staff that they can use elsewhere but the cooks, cleaning up the galley & dining room when done as a complete washing of all the glasses & dishes both used & unused. This represents a large saving for only a few inconvenienced people.
I haven't heard to many complaints from people that have experienced the new method.

Has the change already been made or is it still in limbo?  I personally don't have any problem with closing the dining room during port days.  Just make sure you get to the Horizon Court early or eat on shore.  I think it will really not be a problem & passengers will get used to it.

I'm not sure if it closed on all their ships or just select ones at this time.

no problems for us.  We either go to the buffet or are eating on shore.

This along with changes in the HC hours of operation will probably be standardized. I've been talking to the Head Chef and the Maitre De about these changes here on the Grand and they all agree it is saving a lot of money in both food costs and labor. The International Cafe can handle the occasional late night hungry passenger.

At least they are trying alternative solutions to just raising prices.

I wonder since they don't need the crew in the DR at that time if we'll notice any improvement in the Horizon service, not that it was that bad anyway?

Right.  I've never noticed any problems in any of the Horizon Courts that more personnel would fix.

the one thing I noticed is they have had a lot more waiters serving you drinks etc in the buffet, which makes it a lot easier for some of us not to have to juggle drinks and food back and forth.
