1  Princess Cruising / Cruising Tips Chatter / High mark-ups claimed on cruise ship excursions in New Zealand on: April 16, 2019, 09:38:39 AM
"Cruise ship tourists have complained they are paying up to three times as much for New Zealand tours.

Brochures promoting tours at New Zealand ports by three cruise companies reveal high mark-ups which tourists have labelled a rip-off.  "

ed:  Not only in New Zealand but your cruise ship won't leave you behind on your ship sponsored excursion.
2  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Would you like some cocaine to go with your chips? on: April 16, 2019, 09:33:25 AM
Twelve people have been busted for smuggling $2.6 million worth of cocaine hidden in chip bags and bowls onto MSC Cruises’ liner Opera.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the U.K. announced on Thursday that six men and six women were arrested in Portugal on March 24 for the suspected drug smuggling, the Telegraph reports. The Opera had sailed from the Caribbean to the city of Funchal on the island of Madeira.

Nearly 40 pounds of cocaine was reportedly stashed in bags of chips and ceramic bowls that were inside suitcases."
3  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Weiner and her partner are living large on Princess on: April 16, 2019, 09:28:15 AM
"Weiner, from Highland Beach, Florida, took her first cruise with her late husband in 1989 and continued to travel following his death in 2014. But a recent cruise turned into a real "Love Boat" experience when she met her new partner, Carl Cutting.

"We hit it off almost immediately," he said.

Weiner, Princess Cruise's "most-traveled guest," always books a first-class suite, and while aboard, she enjoys dinners of steak and lobster. She's friendly with the staff, too, including the captain."

4  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / OceanMedallion on: April 16, 2019, 09:23:06 AM
"One of the first things that strike me about the OceanMedallion, is that all you have to do to make it work, is wear it. “There’s no on/off button, no charging, no associations, no configurations; you can wear it in the pool or hot tub. It just works.” Padgett explains. That’s key when the average age of the person taking cruises today is 46 and older and doesn’t fall into the “early adopter” category. “The last thing our passengers need on their vacation is frustration, and that includes the frustration of trying to figure out a new gadget.”

When you sign up for a cruise and establish your likes and dislikes – your basic vacation profile that includes your choice of the ships’ restaurants and excursions, among other things – you can opt-in to use the OceanMedallion free of charge. The company sends it to you a few weeks before your trip, along with a lanyard to wear it in.

Each medallion is equipped with the latest Bluetooth and NFC technology, which allows the ships 7,000 sensors, scanners, and crew e-readers to recognize each person individually, no matter where they are on the vessel. It unlocks your cabin room door when you walk up, no keycard needed; it lets you buy whatever you want on the ship and charges it to your account; it shows your photo, name, and keeps track of your past orders, so that bar and dining staff can greet you personally; and it makes boarding and disembarking as simple as walking past a fancy sensor."
5  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Sea Princess and Ruby Princess found to be dumping plastic in the ocean on: April 16, 2019, 09:19:17 AM
"According to court filings, the court-appointed monitor found that Carnival and its subsidiaries have repeatedly falsified records while on probation as recently as September 2018, when a second engineer on Holland America’s Westerdam ship falsified maintenance records to make it look like he had cleaned and tested equipment when he had not."

During a ship audit in December 2018, according to court filings, monitors found the Carnival Elation ship had dumped plastic overboard; the plastic wasn’t being separated from the food waste. Auditors also found plastic wasn’t being separated properly on the Sea Princess ship in December 2017, the Ruby Princess ship in February 2018, and the Carnival Dream in August 2018."
6  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Cruise ships to dim lights at night in New Zealand on: April 16, 2019, 09:13:48 AM
"The cruise ship industry is taking steps to try prevent seabirds getting stunned by bright lights at night and dying.

Young seabirds are most of risk of crash landing on cruise ships during the night, DOC says.

In a dramatic incident in Auckland last year, about 60 seabirds ended up on the deck of a cruise ship after being attracted by the vessel‘s bright lights.

Some died because they were boxed up together and became distressed."
7  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Federal judge threatens to ban Princess ships from docking at U.S. ports. on: April 16, 2019, 09:09:37 AM
"Judge Patricia Seitz says she wishes she could send the board chairman and president of Carnival Corporation to jail. “The people at the top are treating this as a gnat,” Seitz told the Miami Herald. “If I could, I would give all the members of the executive committee a visit to the detention center for a couple of days. It’s amazing how that helps people come to focus on reality.”

What Seitz is referring to is Carnival’s noncompliance with environmental monitoring that’s required under a five-year probation that began in 2017. That, along with a hefty USD$40 million fine – the largest ever imposed by the U.S. for intentional vessel pollution – is part of a court-ordered penalty after ships in Carnival’s Princess Cruise line were caught dumping oil in the ocean for eight years.

They were finally stopped by a whistleblower, a new crew engineer, who in August 2013 reported the oil dumping in UK waters to the British Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The crew member got off in Southampton and quit, while the UK and U.S. authorities worked together to build the case.

Now, more than five years later, Carnival’s top company executives didn’t even bother to appear on April 10 for the hearing on their probation violation, and Seitz warned that she expects them to be there when she makes her final ruling in June. If she makes good on her threat, Carnival ships will not be allowed to dock at U.S. ports."
8  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Emerald Princess catches on fire out of drydock on: April 16, 2019, 09:04:10 AM

Ed: I sailed on the Emerald Princess 3 days before the ship went into drydock.  During my cruise the crew conducted a fire drill on deck 3.  The fire fighters appeared to me to be well equipped to fight a fire in heavy smoke conditions.

13  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Princess orders two mega sized ships for 2023 and 2025 on: March 27, 2019, 10:44:17 PM
"Princess Cruises and Fincantieri has announced the signing of the final contracts for the construction of two next-generation 175,000-ton cruise ships, which will be the largest ships built so far in Italy with deliveries scheduled in Monfalcone in late 2023 and in spring 2025.

This announcement follows the initial signing of a memorandum of agreement between the two parties in July 2018.

The vessels will each accommodate approximately 4,300 guests and will be based on a next-generation platform design, being the first Princess Cruises ships to be dual-fuel powered primarily by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). LNG is the marine industry’s most environmentally friendly advanced fuel technology and the world’s cleanest fossil fuel, which will significantly reduce air emissions and marine gasoil usage."

15  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Watching your cruise ship sail away without you on: March 07, 2019, 09:09:58 PM
"Before stopping in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, the couple's honeymoon cruise had taken them to Roatan in Honduras, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico. At these stops in Central America, the boat always left at 5.30 p.m., González Roesch told us.

"So, I thought, and Alessandro did too, that at the Bahamas it would be leaving at the same time," she said. "But, it didn't.

The cruise's final stop was Miami, and it was set to depart the Bahamas at 3.30 p.m."
