3301  Princess Cruising / Princess News Chatter / Coral Princess disembarkation delayed at Port Everglades on: May 04, 2011, 04:55:31 PM
"The incident occurred Wednesday at around 6 a.m. on the southeast corner of the port, near Terminal 22. According to a Broward Sheriff's Office duty officer, a deputy attempted to stop 20-year-old Jackson Richardson, who police said was driving a stolen red Ford Mustang and refused to stop.

According to BSO, Richardson led the deputy on a chase. Richardson drove through two manned security gates at the port. That is when the the deputy rammed the car, halting the subject. "BSO sergeant and two BSO deputies started pursuit. He was speeding through the port. They had their lights and sirens on," said Dani Mochella, spokesperson for BSO.

Rescue crews transported the deputy and Richardson to Broward General Hospital with minor injuries.

Numerous law enforcement agencies arrived on the scene, including the BSO Bomb Squad, and temporarily shutdown port entrances and surrounding streets during the incident.

Cruise ships were even diverted to alternate terminals. "They mentioned that there would be a slight delay from the time we were to disembark, so they informed everybody that it would be a little longer," said Princess Cruise ship passenger James Gregory.

All port entrances and streets have since reopened."

"Among the coolest new features of Princess Cruises' new Royal Princess (a 141,000-ton, 3,600-passenger ship) is the SeaView bar. Extending eight metres from the side of the ship and 39 metres above the waves, the glass-bottom bar will offer 20 brave guests the chance to sip cocktails over the ocean. It gives new meaning to liquid courage."

"A spokeswoman for Fremantle Ports said the 65m barge was in port to refuel the Sun Princess cruise ship, which is due to leave today.

She said no significant damage was done to the barge but the impact had damaged an overhead mast attached to the bridge supplying electricity to the trains – any structural damage to the bridge has not been determined."

Sam from Nottingham is a great assistant cruise director, one of my favs.

Princess typically tapes the wakey show the night before.  I hope your cruise goes around the big Island so you can see lava.  Keep up your great "Live" reports.  We want to hear EVERYTHING.
3305  Princess Cruising / Princess News Chatter / Royal Princess Weddings on: April 30, 2011, 03:34:39 PM
"Weddings aboard a cruise ship offer an even bigger romantic water backdrop, plus everything is at a guest's fingertips and the basics are provided at a reasonable cost. Worries about the ceremony, menu, cake, flowers, music, photos and even a tux rental disappear.

Princess Cruises is a popular choice with its combination of shipboard wedding features, services and facilities. Most of the line's ships have dedicated wedding chapels. The company also offers "Tie the Knot Ashore" packages for beach or garden ceremonies. And for those not present on the special day, the ship can broadcast the ceremony live via webcam."

3309  Princess Cruising / Princess News Chatter / Grand Princess Propeller Shaft Bearing Wear Within Acceptable Limits on: April 26, 2011, 01:56:05 PM
"On May 26, 1998, then the largest cruise ship in the world, 109,000 GT Grand Princess, made her inaugural voyage with a 12 night cruise from Barcelona to Istanbul.  Unlike contemporary cruise vessels at the time, she was fitted with seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearings.  Due to her size, risk studies completed by the technical team at Princess Cruises/P&O, in conjunction with the shipbuilder, Fincantieri, indicated that few drydocks could take a vessel of this size.  Any unscheduled drydocking to repair a stern tube seal leaking oil could result in substantial financial losses, pollution risks and long transit to and from a suitably sized drydock. The recommendation: seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearings.

The prudence of that decision has been clearly demonstrated through almost 13 years in service.  Grand Princess has not had any unscheduled drydockings due to stern tube oil leakage - there is no aft seal to leak and the bearings are lubricated with seawater, not oil.

In April 2011, Grand Princess completed a scheduled drydocking at Grand Bahamas Shipyard for extensive upgrades and modifications.  Bearing clearances in the original Thordon COMPAC strut and stern tube bearings were checked and indicated that the bearing wear was well within acceptable limits – please see chart.  Also of financial importance, the bearing design allows for their removal, inspection and re-install with the shaft still in place. The two propeller shafts have never been withdrawn since their installation in 1998.

The ship owner, Carnival Corporation, has continued with that 1998 decision and now has 14 Carnival Corp.-owned cruise ships fitted with Thordon COMPAC seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearings and more COMPAC bearing systems on order for two future newbuilds."

3310  Princess Cruising / Cruising Tips Chatter / How to get through the TSA line faster on: April 25, 2011, 07:45:30 PM
"How to Get Through the Line Faster…

Posted on March 31, 2011

By: John Gobbels, Medjet VP/COO

A few weeks ago I was making a trip to the West Coast when I encountered a flyer that delayed the security screening line due to an unbelievable pack job on her carry-on bag. From bottles of water to her laptop at the bottom of her carry-on, it seemed to never end.

So with that in mind I found some tips from the TSA to make getting through the line faster and easier.

Pack an organized carry-on bag using layers – a layer of clothes, then electronic, more clothes and then any heavier items. This will help transportation security officers see what’s in your bag. Innocent items can actually appear to be potential threats in an X-ray image, simply by the way they’re packed.

Prepare your 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids before arriving at the airport.

Pack all your coats and jackets in your checked baggage when possible. All coats and jackets must go through the X-ray machine for inspection.

When in doubt, leave it out. If you’re not sure about whether you can bring an item through the checkpoint, put it in your checked bag or leave it at home.

Transportation security officers have to identify any metal that is detected at the checkpoint. If the metal detector alarms when you pass through, you will be required to undergo additional screening. This includes a hand-wand and pat-down inspection.

Items that might set off an alarm on the metal detector include:

•Keys, loose change, mobile phones, pagers, money clips and personal data assistants (PDAs)
•Heavy jewelry (including pins, necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, earrings, body piercings, cuff links, lanyards or bolo ties)
•Clothing with metal buttons, snaps or studs
•Metal hair barrettes or other hair decoration
•Belt buckles
•Under-wire bras
•Body Piercings. Certain metal body piercings may cause you to alarm at the metal detector, which will result in you getting additional screening. If additional screening is required, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.
•Head Coverings. You are permitted to wear head coverings and religious garments during the screening process. You may be directed to additional screening if your headwear or clothing (religious or otherwise) is loose fitting or large enough to hide prohibited items.
•Shoes. Travelers are required to remove their shoes before entering the walk-through metal detector at all U.S. airports and put them through the x-ray machine for inspection. This allows officers to see if the shoes have been tampered with in any way.
The items you’ll need to present to a Transportation Security Officer at the checkpoint are:

•Boarding pass
•Identification
It’s encouraged that each adult traveler keep his/her airline boarding pass and government-issued photo ID available until exiting the security checkpoint (children are not required to show identification).

If you do not have identification (if it is lost or stolen as my wife’s was on the west coast trip), you will be required to provide the document checking officer with some information to help verify your identity (we needed the police report). This will slow down your screening process and will result in additional screening.

Hopefully some of these tips will decrease the frustration of the screening process and make its transition faster for you and THOSE behind you!

3311  Princess Cruising / Princess Cruise Agent Chatter / Princess Cruises has made enhancements to its Polar Online booking engine on: April 21, 2011, 05:24:16 AM
"Princess Cruises has made enhancements to its Polar Online booking engine with two new features designed to streamline the booking process for travel agents. Now, agents can electronically apply a client’s future cruise sales deposit to their booking through Polar Online and, for agents associated with a consortium, can view a list of all available groups across the entire organization.

“Based on agent feedback, we’re continually innovating our technology to keep Polar Online the industry’s most useful booking tool available,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service. “These two newest enhancements were heavily requested features, and we’re pleased to add them to our suite of booking functions.”

With the new future cruise sales deposit feature, agents no longer need to call Princess when their clients want to use this incentive on their next cruise; instead, they can now view and apply the deposit conveniently through Polar Online. The fully commissionable future cruise sales deposits are purchased by passengers while onboard, and are applied to a future booking. The incentive includes a reduced deposit and onboard credit of up to $150. When future cruise sales deposits are made onboard, agents receive an immediate notification.

The new group feature will make it easier for agencies associated with consortia to view and plan groups online. Polar Online now shows primary, headquarters and/or consortia groups in addition to groups created by the agency itself. By seeing what groups the association agency has already set up, agencies can more efficiently use their group allotments."

3312  Princess Cruising / Princess News Chatter / Royal Wedding to be streamed live on internet on: April 20, 2011, 01:14:19 AM
"(Reuters) - The wedding of Britain's Prince William to university sweetheart Kate Middleton will be streamed live on the internet via an official royal channel -- the first time a British royal wedding will be covered in this way.

April 29's event, expected to be watched by up to two billion people across the globe, will be available on www.youtube.com/theroyalchannel and accompanied by a live multi-media blog assembled by royal officials.

St James's Palace, whose officials represent Princes William and Harry, said the feed would be taken from British public broadcaster, the BBC, without a broadcaster's commentary.

"Staff at Clarence House and St James's Palace will provide a live commentary with historical information, interesting links, additional photographs and video footage as well as an integrated Twitter feed," the palace said in a statement.

Officials said it was the first time a live blog would run alongside a live stream on video-sharing website YouTube for any occasion.

In addition, an official video "Wedding Book" on YouTube invites anyone to submit their own video of congratulations to the couple.

The royal family, previously seen as out of touch with modern Britain, is making extensive use of the internet and a variety of social media applications in the run-up to the big day.

Photographs related to the wedding will be released via photo-sharing site Flikr, and announcements on the day itself will be published on the official wedding site www.officialroyalwedding2011.org.

A @ClarenceHouse account on short messaging service Twitter will provide live updates on the day, and will be integrated into the live blog.

Alongside the video message option, anyone wanting to send the couple a message of congratulations on Twitter can do so using the hashtag #rw2011, officials said.

The royal family even have a page on social networking site Facebook (www.facebook.com/TheBritishMonarchy).

"Facebook users can click the 'I'm attending' button on 'The Royal Wedding' event to show their interest in the event," St James's Palace said."
