Princess Welcomes Guide Dogs for the Blind Group

Potential Passengers and Their Canine Companions Tour Sea Princess

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (May 27, 2011) -- Sea Princess recently hosted a group of 25 new graduates from Guide Dogs for the Blind and their owners for the day in San Francisco, to familiarize them with how Princess Cruises can accommodate visually impaired travelers and their canine companions.

The group was able to enjoy a tour of the ship and lunch in the dining room, while learning how Princess can provide for their needs and those of their dogs. The event was hosted in association with Dimensions in Travel, a travel agency that regularly organizes travel for Guide Dogs for the Blind clients, to give new guide dog users a feel for what to expect if they join one of the agency's group cruises, or travel independently. Since 2004, Princess has hosted 11 Guide Dogs for the Blind groups on cruises to destinations such as Mexico and Alaska.

"Working with these clients has changed the way we travel," said Diana Saint James, owner of Dimensions in Travel. "It's not all about what we see when we travel anymore -- it's all of our senses. That's what our relationship with our blind travelers has taught us. It's a different way to see the world."

Aboard Sea Princess guests were able to test out many of the special features offered for visually impaired travelers and their dogs. For the dogs, the ships provide special life jackets, bowls of water in the dining room, and relieving boxes with favored cedar chips. Passengers also have specially translated menus and can enjoy reserved seating in the Princess Theater with room for their dogs. During a cruise, passengers and crew are also invited to meet the dogs during a designated play time.

"These dogs are canine heroes," said Brian Rademacher, Princess Cruises district sales manager. "It's truly a labor of love for us to work with this wonderful organization."

3394  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Princess comments on Icelandic Volcanic Activity on: May 27, 2011, 06:40:26 AM

Icelandic Volcanic Activity

Iceland experienced a volcanic eruption over the weekend from the Grimsvotn volcano, and we are currently monitoring the impact of the resulting volcanic ash cloud. At this time there are no changes to our ships' itineraries in Europe. This is a fluid situation and if any itinerary changes become necessary we will be in contact with our passengers.

Because some flights have been affected by airport closures, we highly recommend passengers monitor their airlines website for the latest information on flight operations."

You should be just fine on your upcoming Coral Princess cruise.  Some of the time the germs spread from the on board public restrooms.

The port will only lie dormant in the summer.  We will both be sailing out of the port in November and our schedule hasn't changed.

3398  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / No cruise ships embarking at the Port of Los Angeles this summer on: May 22, 2011, 05:31:30 AM
"For the first time in about 15 years, the usually vibrant, year-round cruise season will lie dormant this summer at the Port of Los Angeles.

Problems first appeared two years ago with the arrival of the H1N1 flu virus, prompting cruise companies to cancel voyages or reroute ships bound for Mexico.

Now, the local cruise industry is sinking because of a relatively weak economy, coupled with the ongoing drug-related violence in Mexico, said Chris Chase, business development manager at the Port of Los Angeles.

"We're really at the mercy of how people perceive Mexico as a whole, even if the port cities aren't reporting any problems," Chase said. "We're hoping the market will quickly turn around and show a new interest in Mexico."
3399  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Princess Cruises has increased their automatic tip charge on: May 21, 2011, 07:33:48 AM
"Princess Cruises has increased the automatic tips to $11.50 balconies and below, $12 per day per person on mini-suites and higher. The roll out is staggered but its hitting all ships either already as they sailed this week or as they take their next voyage pretty much."

3400  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: B2B Internet Minutes on: May 20, 2011, 04:15:54 PM
On the iPad just turn your Internet connection OFF in Settings while you compose your return messages then turn on Internet in settings, connect, send and receive, log off and turn your Internet connection OFF in settings.  My iPad email online time sending and receiving is around 3-4 minutes during non-prime time.  In the wee hours of the morning the ship Internet tends to be smokin' fast.  On B2B cruises just burn off your old minutes the day before or the morning that the ship transistions from one cruise to the next.

Never fail to search for a harbor open wifi connection so can conserve your ship minutes but be very aware as to what Internet connection you are actually using.

Don't forget to use your spouses' Internet minutes after you use up your own.

If you booked a long cruise instead of B2B version of the long cruise you will still get rewarded with new Internet minutes when the ship transistions from the first leg to the second leg of the long cruise.

They removed Skywalkers on the Grand because the aft ship draft was too deep for docking in some ports.  The other Grand class ships used thinner metal in the back, based on the discovery of the Grand Princess aft weight problem, so Princess has no plans to take the cutting torch to any more ships.
3403  Princess Cruising / Princess News & Princess Chatter / Come back soon, Lorraine Arzt on: May 12, 2011, 02:53:03 PM
"In June 2007, Lorraine Arzt was godmother when the ship was re-named Royal Princess in Portofino harbour, Italy. She had been living almost permanently on board Princess cruise ships for the whole of the decade. The picture above shows her with Micky Arison (left), chief executive of Carnival Corporation which owns both Princess and P&O Cruises, Captain Vincenzo Lubrano, and Princess Cruises' Alan Buckelew.

Born in Glasgow and raised in Belfast, where her father was a hairdresser, Lorraine emigrated to America during the Second World War. At the age of 18, she and her brother joined a convoy of 98 ships from Liverpool. Sixteen days later when she arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, only 47 ships were left - the others had been sunk by torpedo attacks.

All the more surprising then, that she should eventually choose a life at sea.

She was spending at least £70,000 a year on having her own suite permanently on board - she sailed on Sea Princess before moving to Royal - and had sailed on dozens of cruises with her husband Joe before he died in 2002.

She said: "It was very different sailing after Joe was gone, especially in the evenings because he was a professional dancer and we used to go and spend our nights on the floor in the ballroom.

"After he died, I didn't want to come back on board because I was scared of how different it would be. But my family saw me going crazy at home and told me to get back on the boat.

"From the minute I stepped back on, the staff didn't leave me alone for a second. They were amazing. There was always someone next to me to have a chat to. While I didn't realise it then, I now know they were taking it in turns to look after me and wouldn't leave my side until they knew someone else was on their way."

In 2009, Lorraine was forced to spend time at home in Beverly Hills, California when Royal Princess was crippled by an engine-room fire and had to be taken to Athens for repairs.

She is back on dry land again now, and a Princess Cruises spokesperson in Southampton was unable to tell me of her future plans.

Come back soon, Lorraine."

"The drydock video journal covered nearly every area involved in the refurbishment project, including work on the underside of the ship, upholstery work, engine control room, new shore power connection, lifeboat updates, new speakers for Movies Under the Stars, mural painting, theater renovations, and a report from the executive chef who was responsible for feeding all the contractors."
