1201  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: Possible smoking limitations being considered on: June 06, 2011, 10:01:32 AM

At this time I do realize "more controlled" on board smoking is only a rumor but one can only hope for more...  Where there is hope, there also can be change...

It looks like the CC thread was squashed.  They don't like anyone to bring up the subject of smoking... Grin It's to controversial & causes arguments and since they consider themselves civilized - it's taboo.   Roll Eyes

The only problem is that this is only an unsubstantiated rumor at this time. I wish Princess would post something on their web site.  Cry
1203  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Possible smoking limitations being considered on: June 04, 2011, 03:14:55 PM
On the cruise critic bulletin board some posted a remark that they had heard from a steward that in Oct Princess would have a smoking ban. No other details other than what the steward had said, but it appears that Princess is about to do something to limit the problem.
Anyone have more info?Huh
1204  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: DAWN PRINCESS - WORLD CRUISE - PAX TOLD NO MORE BOOZE TO BE CARRIED ON on: June 03, 2011, 10:53:04 AM
Recently came off a Golden Princess cruise to Hawaii & was engaged in several conversations concerning what we called Princess Cruises new policy of "nickel & dimming" the passengers.  Many spoke of having to pay 1 1/2 times the cost of a cabin for themselves.  Because of that cost, many of the passengers said they therefore do not purchase anything on board the ship, they have or use only what is included in the cruise cost.  They all said they do cut back on the per day tip & 2 of the people said they give tips in envelopes to the ones they want too, not an unknown list of people.  Now I hear Princess has raised the per day tip... Yes I think there will be an even longer line at the Purser's desk the last day of a cruise in order to make changes & I really can't blame them.  I do think paying 1 1/2 times the cost of a cabin for just one person is an awful lot.  I agree with the people I was talking with...  Princess wants all alcohol to be purchased on board, that is just one way they are "nickel & dimming" the passengers.

By removing the auto tip procedure doesn't insure that the people you actually give the envelopes to actually get to keep the cash. It only has to be thrown back into the big pot & distributed according to Princess's schedule. It still gets to people you don't want to receive it either way.

From what I'm getting from the report is that the Australian cruise might only be affected by any new alcohol ruling. I don't see ant change in the posted rules unless I'm not see it?

I'm not sure where Host Mike saw it, but it was in the most recent Captain's Circle Quarterly.

I must say, $25 onboard credit is not overly generous for 20-30 cruises;  however I was fortunate enought to make the cut for the Captain's Luncheon on my last cruise, and that was indeed very special.

Spot on there, $25 obc will only buy you a bottle of 'house wine' on Princess.  Not even a 'coffee card' those are $30 now, right?'

You would think that after 20 cruises they would at least provide the top cruisers with free perked coffee at no extra charge.  Wink

On our recent trip on the Star we only had a cocktail party to attend & did miss the special lunch. They also shrink the size of the photo taken with the Captain to a 5x7 & not the 8x10 they once gave out. I though this was sort of cheap since they throw away hundreds of purchased photo's & the cost difference between the two sizes for 20 photo's can't be all that much.  Angry  Roll Eyes
1207  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: No cruise ships embarking at the Port of Los Angeles this summer on: May 23, 2011, 06:32:52 AM
All the signs were pointing to this happening since the problems started in Mexico & it doesn't surprise me one bit. Since time is not a factor when I cruise and seeing that I would have to fly to the west coast for any cruise why would I want to take a chance going to Mexico when I could go add a few more days to the trip and go to Hawaii?
I feel sorry for the people who live on the coast of California as they only have two choices remaining to cruise without flying- Alaska & Hawaii and after a number of trips anything can get repetitious.
1208  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: B2B Internet Minutes on: May 18, 2011, 11:13:37 AM
Going on Emerald Princess June 15 for Baltic Cruise and was wondering if you could be credited on account for unused min. I am planning on prepaying so to get some bonus minutes.
They won't give back any $$ for unused minutes. That is why you'll see loads of people at the terminal on the last sea day using up all their minutes & it's almost impossible to get a seat mid morning.
One of these days I'll get a net-book or new version of the ipad in teh fall so I don't have to use their computers.
Rich,
I'd highly recommend a netbook, from experience. In addition to precompossing your email replies, you can 'optimize' any photos you wish to send to a more reasonable size for faster uploading times. Another advantage is that you are restricted to using only one open window in most cases... on your netbook, you can run several tasks at once when opening multiple windows. Last, but not least, it's far quieter and much more pleasant to grab a tea or coffee, and a comfortable seat near the piazza. I can't weigh in on the iPad, but I'd image the same advantages hold true.

I was going to get a netbook but the trend is actually away from them lately & towards the Ipad type. It's actually getting hard to find a netbook advertized since the Ipad was introduced. They're still neat, small & convenient from what I see & if you don't need a constant connection to the web why bother with the extra cost?

1210  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / B2B Internet Minutes on: May 17, 2011, 04:17:18 AM
During our recent b2b I asked the internet manager on the first day if I could carry out unused internet minuter over to the next cruise & was told NO WAY. It's been a while since we've done a b2b & I don't recall what happened since our last one but on the 2 Nd trip the unused minutes were definitely added to our account.
1211  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: Grand Princess pictures after the rebuild on: May 16, 2011, 02:44:55 AM
In my opinion still sad they removed 'Skywalkers' one of the best features of the 'Grand Class' ships. Angry

One would presume Star will be the next to under go cosmetic surgery. Shocked Any rumours there?
My wife thinks the same thing. She keep asking everyone about it on the Star & some people seem to think they will remove it but nothing definite. I personally don't think so as it's a major expense and was only done on the Grand because they had some structural damage & the repairs would have cost major $$$ compared to removing it.
We never utilized Skywalkers that much on any of the ships since unless it's very calm the movement was always amplified and does get annoying after a while. The few times we were there at night the place was practically empty.
On our last trip in April, we had a Captains cocktail party there at 7:15 PM. The seas were relatively calm and you could hardly keep a drink on the table without holding on to it.
1212  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: Grand Princess pictures after the rebuild on: May 14, 2011, 06:14:58 AM
There are a few changes but I think I'll wait a while till everyone else gets to rush on board to see the "new" ship & the prices drop back down to normal. This might create a few bargains on the other ships till then.
I hope they changed some of the mattresses that were ready for the trash.  Angry
1213  Princess Cruising / Cruising Chatter / Re: Cabin Credit on: May 05, 2011, 08:19:25 AM
We just got off the Star an drew down out cabin credit using the casino account charges. They did combing the charges for both myself & my wife into one credit card bill & I didn't hear of anyone complaining about loosing any cabin credit. I'm sure there would have been a ruckus the last day if they did confiscate anyone's cabin credit.

I heard someone say once that if you want to know if a particular cruise line is for you, look at the people in the brochures and see if they look like you;  judging by that, Cunard ain't for me  Cheesy

That's not always true because I look at the Princess's brochure & although they fit my lifestyle the pictures don't come all that close.
Cunard does have a reputation of being stuffy.
