"A cruise ship is refusing to let a New York couple re-book a dream summer vacation after their 5-year-old boy was unable to go on the trip because he was diagnosed with cancer.

The parents of Nicolas Colucci say Norwegian Cruise Line is refusing to accommodate them, citing its cancellation policy.

The family-friendly cruise, in partnership with the Nickelodeon channel, was scheduled to start on June 1, but Nicolas got sick on May 19. He was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his liver, and had surgery a few days later. He is still undergoing chemotherapy."

"According to WNYW, Tara and Philip Colucci’s 5-year-old son, Nicolas, was diagnosed with cancer two weeks before the family was set to leave on a dream cruise.

It required immediate surgery, and the family knew they had to reschedule their trip. But they didn’t have traveler’s insurance, and they say Norwegian Cruise Line told them they couldn’t reschedule or get a refund.

They lost over $4,000.

The cruise line said in a statement that “We spoke with the family and explained that while we could not make an exception to our policy, we would assist them when they were ready to re-book their cruise.”

Not that NCL couldn't have done something in compensation but it still makes me wonder why people skip buying insurance being a cheap as it is.

My heart goes out to the family; but Rich, you are exactly right--this is a perfect example of why you should buy insurance.  NCL could have shown a little more compassion but they are running a business--they can't compensate every uninsured passenger who cancels because of a medical emergency.

I can sort of see why they can't make an exception in any case. I they did it would set a precedence for future cases that made it to court & they would lose all of them. Unfortunately one of the most deserving must lose out.
