"A woman has been medically evacuated from a cruise ship in Dunedin Harbour.

The woman, in her late 60s, had a medical event aboard the Emerald Princess cruise ship around 10am Sunday.

She has been transported ashore to Port Chalmers on one of the ship's tender vessels to receive medical attention, St John's Ambulance advised."

"A St John ambulance spokesman said the Emerald Princess passenger had to be airlifted to hospital this mornng after the ship could not make it into port due to foggy and windy conditions.

The woman was picked up by helicopter at 11.20 am and was in stable condition.

The ship was due to dock at Port Chalmers for the first time since the tragic death of a crew member in an explosion on February 9.

However, the bad weather meant it skipped the Dunedin stop and was headed for Akaroa."
