« Reply #30 on: February 10, 2020, 07:59:48 AM »
"Japan may test every person aboard the Diamond Princess for the coronavirus after it was determined Monday that there were 66 new cases on the quarantined ship docked at a Yokohama port.

The Japan Times, which first reported the increase, said the passengers will be able to disembark after test results become available. Princess Cruises confirmed to Fox News the number of new cases."

MedJet to the rescue - or not
« Reply #31 on: February 10, 2020, 08:34:28 PM »
"In an attempt to escape the infection, Gay Courter said she contacted her insurance company, Medjet, which is willing to send a crisis extraction team to the boat to evacuate her, CNN reported.

The U.S. and Japanese governments, however, won't allow that to happen."

Americans are not fond of Japanese lock down food fare.
« Reply #33 on: February 10, 2020, 08:46:49 PM »
“Lots of the passengers now are getting a bit of cabin fever,” David Abel, a British passenger, said in a Facebook video. “Depression is starting to set in.”

"Another passenger said he hoped assurances about the effectiveness of quarantine and ventilation onboard would prove true.

Quarantine has made life on board the ship difficult, particularly for those in windowless cabins and for the large number of passengers who require medication for chronic conditions."

“It’s not right that I should grumble, but I am in that group. I’m not enjoying the food, it’s just not my choice of food. Even though I’m losing weight, it’s very hard to eat the type of food they’re providing for me,” Abel said, adding that lunch on Monday had been “two huge pieces” of salmon with vegetables. “Now I know that’s really good for me, but the salmon was so damn dry I couldn’t eat it.”

Other passengers praised the food, noting that the quantity had increased since the ship first went into lockdown a week ago.

Matthew Smith sympathised with the newly diagnosed people but said in a Twitter post Monday that “life goes on”, adding that he had no complaints about the food. "

Crew on quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship pleads for help
« Reply #35 on: February 10, 2020, 08:54:12 PM »
"A group of Indian crew members have been sharing videos on Facebook since Thursday, begging their government to rescue them.

One of them, Binay Kumar Sarkar, said that he and his team members are "scared." Speaking in Hindi and flanked by five other crew members, he called not only on the Indian government but also the United Nations to enforce an "urgent segregation." Those who are healthy should be allowed to disembark before they, too, contract the coronavirus, he said.

"Day by day [it's] spreading ... rapidly," he wrote, and "and risking everyone's [lives]."

Americans plead to President Trump "Get us off the ship"
« Reply #36 on: February 10, 2020, 08:57:53 PM »
"We just don't feel like we're safe," Basso told CNN. "We should be quarantined in a sanitary environment that's safe, not on a cruise ship that's already infected."

Basso made a plea to US President Donald Trump: "Get us a government-based airplane. Get us off the ship."

Life is good but they are missing their nightly chocolates
« Reply #39 on: February 12, 2020, 03:37:12 PM »
“We get good food. We had a bottle of wine delivered earlier. Really, life is good.”

“We’re missing our nightly chocolates,” Lolita Wiesner said of the bedtime treat staff left on their pillows each night.

But they have a “stash” of eight pieces leftover from their pre-quarantine days, she said.

“So, we get one every other day until the end.”

Virus fears grow among Diamond Princess crew
« Reply #40 on: February 12, 2020, 04:02:54 PM »
"Princess Cruises did not respond to a request for comment about the conditions of the crew members, but the Japanese government said it is working to improve their situation.

"We are aware of their concerns, have heard voices that more needs to be done to improve their conditions, and we have been considering measures to address those issues," Masami Sakoi, a senior official in the Health Ministry, told reporters.

Sakoi said the government needed the crew to sustain operations on board the ship, which was placed on a 14-day quarantine at the Japanese port of Yokohama last week. He said the government is sending a group of experts to assess living and working conditions on board the ship on Wednesday.

"After their assessment of the conditions, we would like to address those issues as much as possible in cooperation with the operating company," he said."

"The quarantine officer who was infected had been handing out questionnaires checking the health of passengers and crew and had been following rules that require the wearing of a mask and gloves but not a full protective suit, according to the Nikkei business daily, quoting the health ministry."

The burdens on the crew are immense
« Reply #42 on: February 12, 2020, 04:11:52 PM »
As the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise liner increases day by day, the crew members are facing a high risk of suffering mental stress while fulfilling their job responsibilities, according to the experts.

“Burdens on the crew are immense. They are under double stress stemming from a sense of mission and the anxiety that they might have been infected,” said Sho Takahashi, associate professor at the University of Tsukuba’s Faculty of Medicine.

Noting that passengers tend to vent their frustration on crew members, Takahashi said, “Employees aboard the ship should be protected.”

Some passengers expressed worries about the crew."

"In a video statement on Wednesday, Princess Cruises Executive Vice President Rai Caluori said that "the quarantine protocols on board the Diamond Princess are completely under the control of the Japanese Ministry of Health."

"According to Caluori the more than 1,000 crew currently working on board the ship will receive "normal pay and gratuities and paid time off following the quarantine."
Caluori assured guests and cited a letter sent to passengers and crew by Amy Schuchat of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying that, "The CDC has no evidence to suggest that the virus can spread between rooms on a ship through the air handling system."

He added that in abundance of caution the ship is "maximizing the percentage of fresh air in crew and guest cabins as well as public spaces."
On Tuesday, ship Captain Stefano Ravera  sought to reassure those on board about the ship's air conditioning system.

In a public address to the ship, Ravera said, "I would like to assure you that we are indeed supplying 100% fresh air throughout the ship, including your staterooms. And the air is not being recirculated."
