Ocean Medallion is in use on one ship - Caribbean Princess
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:14:46 PM »
"The cruise giant also said one of its brands, Princess Cruises, had reached a long-awaited milestone. The Ocean Medallion technology project, first announced in early 2017, is in use for all 3,100 passengers on one ship, Caribbean Princess.

The cruise line had been phasing the technology in by groups of passengers rather than launching it all at once as originally planned.
During the earnings call, Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald said guest satisfaction scores on the ship were up and are among the highest in the Princess fleet."

"Our guests on Caribbean Princess and our crew on Caribbean Princess are experiencing land-like speed, such that they can FaceTime with their friends, watch Netflix, stream their favorite football game, as if they were in a hotel on land."

It does sound like a great improvement for the internet speed.
I wonder if the crew now has unlimited access or are they still charging them?

I hear that the Ruby Princess has Ocean Medallion installed but not activated.

I've been following a few people on board & they're comments were that it's working great. It's so quick that some of them were able to stream live programs without interruption.
Of course this was when they were still giving unlimited internet for everyone as compensation since the OM system still wasn't fully functioning. Now that the OM is pretty much in operation that's come to an end & they're back to the 250 minutes free for Platinum & Elite.....or you can buy the unlimited internet for $9.99 per day if purchased for the whole trip.
I'm not sure what the price is piece meal.
I wonder if they now give unlimited internet for all the crew as a bonus. (which they should)

keep in mind that OM - Ocean Medallion and MedallionNet are two different things. OM is the bluetooth goodie you wear and MN is the new MEO satellite system that delivers super fast internet...

It worked but other than for entering the cabin & locating your cabin mate it doesn't seem to offer much over the cruise card. It was just something else to carry around all day. I did make a magnetic thing to stick it on my shirt like a badge so I would have to wear one of their necklaces or buy of of their overpriced accessories.  ;D
They also need many more sensors since using it to find your shipmate is sketchy at best. It provides a general location but nothing exact as I though it would. At least it gives a deck & general area which is better than looking around the whole ship. It'll give you a location like show lounge, which when almost filled is next to impossible to actually find anyone. I suppose when they get it working better they'll  improve upon it.

One really bad feature about it is, if you should lose your medallion, anyone who finds it can go directly to your cabin & enter it unless you report it immediately. Although the cabin number is not printed on the medallion, any of the boards around the ship will give you the exact cabin location. Very poorly thought out.
When I brought it to the attention of the PSD they didn't consider it to be a problem, so I asked when they would start printing the cabin number on the cruise cards.  ::)
No comment.  :D  :D

I'm sure they have to make a change in their software & boards very shortly.
