"Updated March 4, 2020

Last night / early this morning, our chief medical officer Dr. Grant Tarling issued this Health Advisory Letter to guests and crew currently sailing onboard Grand Princess. A similar notification has been emailed to guests who sailed on the previous voyage. For guests who sailed on the previous Grand Princess voyage (Feb 11-21), if you have experienced any symptoms of acute respiratory illness with fever, chills, or cough since your return home, please immediately contact your medical provider. You can also view the COVID-19 information card (PDF) provided by the CDC.
Guests Health Advisory – Coronavirus
March 4, 2020

Dear Princess Guest:

I wish to advise you that today we have been notified by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that they are investigating a small cluster of COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases in Northern California connected to our previous Grand Princess voyage that sailed roundtrip San Francisco from February 11 to February 21. We are working closely with our CDC partners and are following their recommendations.

For those guests who sailed with us on our previous voyage and may have been exposed, in an abundance of caution, the CDC requires you to remain in your stateroom until you have been contacted and cleared by our medical staff. A member of our medical team will be calling you between the hours of 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM this morning. You may order room service while you wait for the medical screening to be completed, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Please be assured that the health, safety, and well-being of all guests and crew are our absolute priority. The CDC is continuing to actively collect information and has set up a meeting with us this morning to determine what, if any, actions need to be taken during this cruise and on arrival in San Francisco. We have shared essential travel and health data with the CDC to facilitate their standard notification to the State and County health authorities to follow up with individuals who may have been exposed to people who became ill.

As we anticipate that further review of the situation will be necessary on arrival in San Francisco, we will be cancelling the call to Ensenada on Thursday, March 5, in order to sail directly to San Francisco and arrive on Thursday afternoon. We will keep you updated with information as we finalize plans. To assist you in contacting your family, we are providing free internet and phone service. We will advise you if the need arises to make changes to your onward travel plans post-cruise.

COVID-19 causes mild illness in about 80% of cases, typically with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath, like the common cold or flu. About 20% of people develop more severe symptoms. The more severe symptoms typically occur in more susceptible individuals that have higher risk factors, such as older adults and those with chronic medical conditions, as it does with regular flu. The illness is mainly spread by droplets from close person-to-person contact. It is possible for the virus to spread by hand touch surfaces, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Updated information on the illness can be found at the CDC website.

As with all respiratory illnesses, particularly during cold and flu season, you can take steps to reduce your risk of illness:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Supplement hand washing by regularly using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid close contact with people suffering from respiratory illness.
Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze using a tissue or your bent elbow.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

We are closely recording and monitoring all persons who have reported to the medical center with cold and flu symptoms during the voyage. As a precaution, we are also conducting additional enhanced environmental disinfection onboard in addition to our regular stringent cleaning and sanitation protocols.

If you have experienced any symptoms of acute respiratory illness with fever, chills, or cough at any time during this cruise, and you have not already consulted with the medical staff, please immediately contact the Medical Center to report your illness. There will not be a charge for this service.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important information.

To access complimentary internet, turn on your Wi-Fi and access the “ocean” network for connection.

Yours in health,

Grant Tarling, MD, MPH

"SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — A Northern California patient, one of two local residents who fell ill with coronavirus after returning from a round-trip cruise between San Francisco and Mexico, has become the state’s first death from the illness."

"Princess said it was canceling the Grand Princess was currently on a trip from San Francisco to Hawaii and back with a call in Ensenada, Mexico scheduled for Thursday; the ship was instead sailing directly to San Francisco and expected to arrive Thursday afternoon."

They really don't have much choice other than quarantine them for a while.
Anyone leaving on any cruise lately should be prepared for that possibility.

The shows are canceled but the casino is open.

"There are fewer than 100 guests and crew identified for testing, including all in-transit guests (guests who were on the previous Mexico voyage and remained onboard for the current Hawaii voyage), those guests and crew who have experienced influenza-like illness symptoms on this voyage, and guests currently under care for respiratory illness." The ship is now near the California coast, but must remain at sea as it awaits coronavirus test kits to be delivered by helicopter."

"Public health officials have advised that no guests will be permitted to disembark until all results have been received," Princess Cruises said in a statement."

"At least 21 people -- 11 passengers and 10 crew members -- currently on board the Grand Princess ship have developed symptoms of illness, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

Newsom declared a state of emergency and said local health officials are working with their federal counterparts to trace people who had contact with the man who died.

"This emergency proclamation will help the state further prepare our communities and our health care system in the event it spreads more broadly," he said.

Princess Cruises said it has shared relevant travel and health data with the CDC to help notify state and county health officials, who will follow up with anyone who may have been exposed to coronavirus."

"The cruise line said federal health officials are requiring anyone from the previous voyage to remain in their rooms until they've been cleared."

"The Florida couple said they were not confined to their rooms as of Wednesday night. Pace said the cruise ship had canceled its theater shows, but the casino was open."

I may be way off base here, but Princess might suffer a little brand damage.
It could have been anyone else's brand, but it wasn't.
The whole segment is going to have a few rough quarters, along with air carriers, and resorts.
A super rough time to be a travel agent. :-[

Just a little?
Anyway, just this week all the people that knew we were leaving next week on a cruise were appalled that we were going on a cruise in the middle of this virus outbreak. When they found out it was Princess, even more so. Not that it couldn't happen to any cruise line at any time.
Although I don't believe it, I  think it's affected Princess more than the others although it's probably only for the short term.

2 week land quarantine for all Grand Princess passengers
« Reply #6 on: March 08, 2020, 07:46:38 PM »
"Authorities say there are almost 1,000 Californians aboard the ship and they will be quarantined for 14 days at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield and Miramar Air Station in San Diego. Passengers from other states will spend 2 weeks at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas or Dobbins Air Force Base in Georgia. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services say foreign passengers will be repatriated to their respective countries."

The Grand Princess cruise ship has been circling off the coast of San Francisco since Wednesday night, as authorities worked with cruise line operators to determine where the ship would dock.

The Port of Oakland was chosen because there are limited locations capable of docking a cruise ship and, according to Cal OES, Oakland is the easiest location to seal off and allow for safe the transport of passengers once they disembark."

"Self-quarantine for those not showing symptoms
« Reply #8 on: March 10, 2020, 07:10:28 PM »
"The Tulsa Health Department says those Oklahomans showing symptoms will stay in California and those who don’t will be brought back to the state and self-quarantine for 14 days."

Ed: Those who didn't show symptoms, at least for Oklahoma passengers, were transferred to a U.S. military base.

"But he said health authorities will be transporting passengers home securely, while wearing protective equipment and sanitizing the vehicles. He said the health authorities are working to ensure the isolated former cruise ship passengers have the food and medicine deliveries they need while they are kept away from the general public.

Those who disobey the rules of their quarantine could face criminal penalties, Dick said, but the health district has other ideas on how to ensure the isolation period is enforced. They will be provided with thermometers to help them monitor their symptoms during the home quarantine period and will remain under supervision of their local health authority."
