Sky Princess daily report
« on: March 09, 2023, 04:35:44 PM »
Your editor is taking a 14 day Sky Princess repo cruise from Ft Lauderdale to Southampton with a stop in  Casablanca.  Embarkation is on March 18th.  The ship, so far, isn’t full.  I plan to post an unfiltered report of daily Sky Princess ship life.

I should have an answer for you after March 18th.  Equally important to speed is will there be forced logoffs after X minutes.

But what good would that do to increase the download speed since they no using it at all?
I'm waiting for Starlink.

Sky Princess day one observations

Sky Princess day one observations

•   Boarding at noon in Ft Lauderdale Princess terminal two was speedy except for a delay caused by a very  heavy handed  terminal Xray wand guy.
•   Bags delivered to room within an hour of being placed into the outside cage.
•   Sail away dancers and their dance music by the pool were amazing.
•   Princess Patter is now just one page with microscopic printing and unreliable availability times. (are you listening Loyalty and Events Manager?)
•   Pre-cruise Sabatini reservation form says 5 pm is the opening  time.  Sabatini staff say it is 5:30 pm.
•   Sabatini cabin TV menu says one thing, Actual menu says another.  Staff says “We have a new menu.”
•   Last week’s Sky Princess passenger count in the Caribbean was over 4,000 with lots of kids.  This week’s Sky Princess passenger count for repo is 2,000 with very few kids.  Next cruise will be back to almost 4,000.
•   During Captain’s announcements he starts coughing and then apologizes.
•   Aft dining room is no longer fixed seating.
•   British sounding cruise director is pleasant but talks extremely fast.
•   GL.iNet Travel router combines all of my electronics into one MedalionNet device subscription.
•   T-Mobile WiFi calling works in airplane mode
•   Magician was self promoting and show was OK.  Sound levels at times were blasting.
•   Mini-bar complete trade out was only for one unopened bottle of wine.  Most of us know the potential $ hit from Princess for an unopened bottle of wine.
•   Internet speed – 2 down, 2 up.
•   More than 20 Princess cruises OBC rewards are no more.
•   Cutoff for the Captain’s private party on this cruise is 460 Princess days.
•   Standard balcony cabin bookings (us) were not allowed to bid on a suite upgrade.
•   Non-denominational Sunday service was 100% Catholic, officiated by red capped, good hearted priest who now apparently frequents cruise ships.
•   It appears that gun cokes are free, so far, for the asking.
•   In the top side buffet (formerly Horizon Court) oatmeal is on one side of the buffet, oatmeal toppings are on the other side of the buffet.  Syrup coffee taste is  passible.
•   Bathroom hand soap squirter can squirt all the way across our tiny  bathroom if we (I) are not careful.
•   Our wing of the big balcony Dolphin deck cabins is mostly empty.
•   No comment about a few loud talking/pushy passengers.

Interesting read. We haven't been on the Sky as of yet but it does sound quite similar to the Enchanted in many ways.
We're contemplating a trip on the Sky in the future

Sky Princess day one observations

•   Bags delivered to room within an hour of being placed into the outside cage.
We carried our bags on but it sounds like they are getting faster.

•   Princess Patter is now just one page with microscopic printing and unreliable availability times. (are you listening Loyalty and Events Manager?)
They're proud of being able to save paper, hence the one page limit.....at a cost to most of us.

•   Last week’s Sky Princess passenger count in the Caribbean was over 4,000 with lots of kids.  This week’s Sky Princess passenger count for repo is 2,000 with very few kids.  Next cruise will be back to almost 4,000.
We had over 3,600 and it was evident that the ship was at capacity.

•   Aft dining room is no longer fixed seating.
I don't think any of the ship are now.

•   British sounding cruise director is pleasant but talks extremely fast.
Am I ever in trouble. I can't understand those Brits even if they don't talk fast.

•   GL.iNet Travel router combines all of my electronics into one MedalionNet device subscription.
It sounds interesting. I'll have to look into one.

•   T-Mobile WiFi calling works in airplane mode
Are you using WhatApp? We found T-Mobile to be free all over the Caribbean for Texts and downloads.

•   Magician was self promoting and show was OK.  Sound levels at times were blasting.
What else is new?

•   Mini-bar complete trade out was only for one unopened bottle of wine.  Most of us know the potential $ hit from Princess for an unopened bottle of wine.
No more coffee trade.  :'(

•   Internet speed – 2 down, 2 up.
Enjoy, it'll get much slower as most of the ship probable had unlimited internet.

•   More than 20 Princess cruises OBC rewards are no more.
I think you're talking about the loyalty credit? Yea, it's gone.  >:(

•   Cutoff for the Captain’s private party on this cruise is 460 Princess days.
In late Jan/Feb it was around 650 days on out cruise. How was your lunch? We didn't receive an invitation to the first one but knew enough to check beforehand otherwise we would have missed it.  >:(

•   It appears that gun cokes are free, so far, for the asking.
I wonder how long that'll last?

•   In the top side buffet (formerly Horizon Court) oatmeal is on one side of the buffet, oatmeal toppings are on the other side of the buffet.  Syrup coffee taste is  passible.
I didn't eat oatmeal but noticed the same thing on the Enchanted.

•   Bathroom hand soap squirter can squirt all the way across our tiny  bathroom if we (I) are not careful.
Same on the Enchanted.

•   No comment about a few loud talking/pushy passengers.
They're on your ship too ! What irrataing is when they have to scream at the top of their lungs in the show lounge.

I suppose your trivia prizes have also been reduced to a coaster and a thank you for playing.  ;D  Can they get any cheaper?

On the Enchanted they're now reserving many of seats for the entertainers guests, handicapped and now even for the Premium people which are released 10 minutes prior to the show to general seating.

Oh, btw, they've disconnected the ability to switch the TV's input to HDMI on the Enchanted, although the USB input is still an option, for now.

Sky Princess day two observations

Sky Princess day two observations

o   Noticed that Princess Theater aisles have warning lights where he steps are deeper.
o   No receipts are provided in the restaurants or bars.  You have to keep very close watch on your shipboard account.
o   Dear wife (DW) says that the Princess bathroom body wash does not have a pleasing smell.
o   Princess daily tip charge of $16 to $18 per day per person plus the mandatory tips at every bar  really takes a enormous bite out of your OBCs.
o   Music trivia contests are fun but it is nearly impossible to win a bottle of wine because the contest is rigged with a few songs and artists that are very obscure. The music during the contest on this ship is blasting, as is the norm on Princess.
o   Near the back of the ship you can still see stars at night but it is not easy due to ship lights and blowing smoke from the funnels.
o   Ship time changes at noon today.  Who ever heard of the ship time changing at noon?  And how are our cellphones and wristwatches going to update DW asks?
o   Internet speed is still 2 up and 2 down.
o   On these newer Princess ships the fitness center is open 24 hours a day.
o   30 minute Princess Theater shows seem to be a thing of the past.  45 minute shows seem to be the new normal.
o   Loyalty desk gal (formerly Captain’s circle rep) told me that she had never heard of additional OBCs being rewarded for  20+ Princess cruises (credits).

Note to RichC: The travel router I have is the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 (Slate AX).  There are cheaper travel routers but this model works perfectly for me other than occasionally needing a few seconds to authorize a device log in.  It never times out. As far as T-Mobile WiFi calling goes, I’m talking about cell phone talking in airplane mode, not Internet texting or data communicating.  Others have confirmed that on Sky Princess the ONLY offer for a mini-bar swap is a bottle of wine.  Our coughing captain’s special loyalty lunch party has not yet been held AFAIK.  I’m just a few days short of the needed cutoff  since this repo cruise is full of Super Elites.  The bathroom soap dispenser squirt issue appears to be common on the Sky.  The problem is that the squirt handle is very difficult to push. I have learned from my DW that the trick is to put the dispenser down in the wash basin, aim the nozzle toward the mirror away from you and push the nozzle down hard.  Since this voyage is so empty Princess Theater reservations are a non-issue.  On the cabin TV input observation, no HDMI inputs are visible but a small part of some sort of connector cable was visibly hanging a little below our TV . I did look like a USB connector is located on the bottom edge of the TV on each side.   Strangely our cabin TV is ever so slightly tilted on the mount.

Same on the Enchanted- It seems to be a similar problem for the last 2 or 3 steps in the show lounge.

o   No receipts are provided in the restaurants or bars.  You have to keep very close watch on your shipboard account.
Use you phone tp check daily for errors. We had MANY.

o   Princess daily tip charge of $16 to $18 per day per person plus the mandatory tips at every bar  really takes a enormous bite out of your OBCs.
Yep. An still I noticed man people tipping over that amount.

o   Music trivia contests are fun but it is nearly impossible to win a bottle of wine because the contest is rigged with a few songs and artists that are very obscure.
For one thing they don't change the questions and people doing a B2B know the answers.  ;D But as you probably know by now, the prizes have diminished to practically worthless. A coaster?? Can they get any cheaper?

o   Ship time changes at noon today.  Who ever heard of the ship time changing at noon?  And how are our cellphones and wristwatches going to update DW asks?
Ours changed during the middle of the night. I just set my phones to not auto update the time, but my wife's watch was always out of sync.

o   Internet speed is still 2 up and 2 down.
Congratulations. Something is better after all on the Sky.

o   Loyalty desk gal (formerly Captain’s circle rep) told me that she had never heard of additional OBCs being rewarded for  20+ Princess cruises (credits).
Wow, she must really be a newbie. Perhaps she knew it as "Loyalty Credit"
$25 for 31 cruises
$50 for 32-42 cruises
$75 for 42-51 cruises
$100 for 52+ cruises.

Note to RichC: The travel router I have is the GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 (Slate AX).  There are cheaper travel routers but this model works perfectly for me other than occasionally needing a few seconds to authorize a device log in.  It never times out. I'm still not sure what advantages the travel router give you on a ship.
I just switched out T-Mobile phones into airplane mode, then turned data back on. I also had WhatsApp installed and it worked like a charm for calls and texting. (with audible notifications)
The switch out for the setup has been modified. It's still an even swap for liquor, soda for water, everything for a bottle of wine. The exchange for a coffee program (cards) have been eliminated.

Sounds like your TV is slightly different. Our TV has both USB and HDMI on one side but I could only switch to the USB input by using the almost hidden toggle switch located center bottom on the TV.
First tune to a news channel, maneuver the toggle switch to input and then select USP input which will be highlighted on the screen. I could then feed my movies directly into the TV (HD formatted in NTFS, not exFAT). It will reset automictically when you switch the set off & on. It was a pleasure to have some newer movies late night as there's were all old except for a very few and we've seen them in Dec.

I forgot to mention- The Milestone program was also eliminated a while back also. At 500 and 750 sailing days- special recognition at the Capt. party, a bottle of wine & breakfast everyday in Sabatini's with the full suite people.

Sky Princess day three observations

Sky Princess day three observations

   Spotlight Bar production show pre-show arrival music was unexpectedly loud. The pre-show songs included an obscure cool song from Sons of Anarchy.  The production show had great dancing and singing along with some booming bass and strobe lights hitting the audience in the face near the end.  A few women in the audience stood up and acted like star struck teenagers during the show finale.
   I  noticed for the first time that Princess Theater reserved seats have a blue jacket on the back cushion.
   The cabin desk chair is very heavy.
   Our cabin steward, who I can barely understand, left a surprise premade towel elephant in the cabin.
   It’s day two waiting for Elite laundry to return.
   Tonight is the second Princess Theater show that features opera type singing.  Will there be star struck women standing during the opera style singing finale?  We shall  see.
   Aft dining room on formal night was nearly empty for the first hour.  When we left, for maybe the first time, I didn’t see anyone wearing a T-Shirt.  Very few men were wearing ties.
   Noticed that Princess is recruiting more wait staff from Africa.
   Bread seems more hard crusted than expected.
   Today is another back to back time change at noon.  Yesterday it was late afternoon before they updated the time on the video displays near the elevators.  I figured out how to reset iPhones for time changes IF I can figure out what major cities, if any, exist in this mid Atlantic time zone.
   Ship captain is no longer coughing during announcements.
   Food quality on the Sky Princess is quite good other than there seems to be a shortage of salt for seasoning in the galleys.
   The tall cup of brewed coffee price in the International Cafe has increased to $2.95.
   Even “on-sale” cheap costume like jewelry in the Shops of Princess is expensive.
   The Sky Princess Fine Art Gallery gouache paintings appear to be exact replicas of what you see on all of the other Princess ships.  Basically what you see is reproduced on an acrylic printing press.
   I’ve come to the conclusion that the music trivia contests are created by U.K. people and are  based on the U.K. charts.  In one past 50’s music trivia contest one of the answers was flat out wrong.
   The number of bingo blackout calls needed to win is nearly always 55 calls.  Each card has a serial number and typically a computer, behind the scenes, plays all cards in the room at once.  When the computer sees a bingo it can flash a light to the caller so that the caller will quietly pause the game and wait for a winner to shout out.
   Cruising speed of the Sky Princess has been 19 knots for several days.
   We have learned that a Heathrow security workers strike begins the day before we disembark. A rail strike will occur on the day we disembark.
   SES Internet speed is still in the 2 up 2 down range with ping around 200-300 and jitter improving from the 123 to 37.  Paramount plus streaming is a no go on my iPad.
   So far the Atrium/Piazza has not been filed with sale tables.  Just a few ship photographers here and there in the evening.

Sky Princess day three observations

   Spotlight Bar production show pre-show arrival music was unexpectedly loud.
We all know that this is nothing new for Princess.  ;D

A few women in the audience stood up and acted like star struck teenagers during the show finale.
There always seem to be a few. I just love it when they give a performance a standing ovation.

   I  noticed for the first time that Princess Theater reserved seats have a blue jacket on the back cushion.
Those seats are for the new Princess Plus people. Open to everyone 10 minutes before the show.

   Tonight is the second Princess Theater show that features opera type singing.  Will there be star struck women standing during the opera style singing finale?  We shall  see.
?????? Were they there????

   Aft dining room on formal night was nearly empty for the first hour.  When we left, for maybe the first time, I didn’t see anyone wearing a T-Shirt.  Very few men were wearing ties.
Almost the same thing on the Enchanted. I will say that it's nice to have the new Princess relaxed dress code which allows people to choose how formal they want to be.

   Noticed that Princess is recruiting more wait staff from Africa.
Same on the Enchanted although those guys did speak clearly.

   The tall cup of brewed coffee price in the International Cafe has increased to $2.95.
I don't know how it is on the Sky but on other Princess ships they used to have free brewed coffee during the middle of the night, up until around 6 AM. Did you happen to have one of their donuts? They've become really bad due to a changed recipe. Nothing like previous years.

 Paramount plus streaming is a no go on my iPad.
Did you check Netflix? For some reason they're faster to stream and download.

   So far the Atrium/Piazza has not been filed with sale tables.  Just a few ship photographers here and there in the evening.
In general we saw (my wife) very few of the typical Princess sales (like in the DR). I don't think they have the inventory to display any more.

Did you happen to purchase the photo package or have it included with one of your packages? (That is if you even have a plus package)

Sky Princess day four observations

Sky Princess day four observations

   Third of seven time changes occurred at noon today.  Fortunately Captain’s noon announcement tells us what city is needed to reset our iPhone time.  Yesterday it was a place in South Georgia. Today it was Praia, Cape Verde.
   Princess Theater reserved seats are flagged for the Princess Premier $80 per day per person class. They are not in a prime location and they seem to stay empty.
   Staff are standing at each entry door at the Shops of Princess.  They are either there for hospitality or are they are there for enhanced inventory security.
   We noticed that sandwiches are being generally served on small rolls.
   One passenger service rep says that they don’t print transfer tickets unless they are sold on board.  Another passenger service rep says that they print transfer tickets regardless of where they are sold.
   I told Sarah, the young british cruise director assistant that I was from Oklahoma.  She asked me if Oklahoma was in Central America.  I told her that Oklahoma was located in North America just north of Texas.  Then she asked if Oklahoma was a city or a state.  I told her that it was both.
   A few of the female passengers on board are dressing in clothing which hides nothing.
   Princess claim to offering “the best WiFi at sea” on this voyage should say “the worst WiFi at sea.”
   Ship elevator doors close so fast and so hard that a person could easily be injured.
   The itinerant Catholic priest serving on cruise ships including the Sky Princess wears a red cap because he says his priest level falls between that of a bishop and a  cardinal.   When the cap blows away it costs him about $50 to replace it.
   Some shortage of waiters in Fresh Market aka Horizon Court at noon.
   Two day turnaround for Elite laundry on this half empty ship.
   Minibar very limited trading options do not seem to match with the official Princess position.
   For a time this morning the oatmeal toppings were near the oatmeal but then they were moved away.  Cream-of-Wheat is by one day advance request.  Figs are hard to find. Such is the life of a poor sailor.
   Seems like there are a lot of Canadians, as always, on this voyage.
   I took photos of the two 220 volt electrical outlets on the wall under the head of the bed.  One was used to feed both bed lights and the other was unused.  The outlets exactly match the European outlets on the desk.

Note to RichC – I chose to have no Princess pricy upgrades.  I’m just Princess Standard in an ordinary balcony cabin (that happens to have a deeper deck) in the back of Dolphin deck very near the elevators.  No noise is heard in the cabin from the elevator lobby.

Sky Princess day four observations

   Princess Theater reserved seats are flagged for the Princess Premier $80 per day per person class. They are not in a prime location and they seem to stay empty.
They're not prime but if you're late to arrive for the show, they're better than standing if you can get one. I'll still arrive early as usual for our choice seats.

   Staff are standing at each entry door at the Shops of Princess.  They are either there for hospitality or are they are there for enhanced inventory security.
On the Enchanted they never seemed very filled. At least in comparison to the old days.
Maybe it was because of the increased prices?

   A few of the female passengers on board are dressing in clothing which hides nothing.
It all depends on their age and their size.  ;D

   Princess claim to offering “the best WiFi at sea” on this voyage should say “the worst WiFi at sea.”
Another reason for forgo the plus package.

   Ship elevator doors close so fast and so hard that a person could easily be injured.
I still can't quite understand why they can't like all the elevator banks together? People just press call buttons in both banks which causes unnecessary stops all day long.

   Some shortage of waiters in Fresh Market aka Horizon Court at noon.
I thought the medallion system was supposed to alleviate that problem?

   Two day turnaround for Elite laundry on this half empty ship.
Of course it is, how could they sell you preferred service otherwise if it were fast.

   Minibar very limited trading options do not seem to match with the official Princess position.
What wouldn't they let you trade for? We switched for a bottle of wine one cruise and all Perrier on another cruise.

   Seems like there are a lot of Canadians, as always, on this voyage.
It's that time of year. :D

Note to RichC – I chose to have no Princess pricy upgrades.  I’m just Princess Standard in an ordinary balcony cabin (that happens to have a deeper deck) in the back of Dolphin deck very near the elevators.  No noise is heard in the cabin from the elevator lobby.
I refuse to play the game of bidding for an upsell for a cabin. We always book a cabin near the elevators and have never been bothered by any noise.

I'm in the process of cancelling our Plus package for our next 20 day cruise. From past experience we've found that it just doesn't pay in our case. Lousy internet, forced (mentally to over drink) in order to get full advantage of the price. We'll just pay our gratuities out of our OBC and pocket the difference.

Sky Princess day five observations

Sky Princess day five observations

•   All patters were recalled last night and redistributed this morning.
•   Noticed that the elevators at times are prepositioned to different floors.
•   Cabin sink drain is set to barely open.  A Phillips head  screwdriver would be needed to change the setting.
•   Styx’s Come Sail Away was playing in the dining room at noon.  Easy listening island music is no more in Fresh Market/Horizon Court.  BTW “fresh” is a debatable term after repo sailing for many days.
•   Our patio door was left unlocked behind a closed curtain by the cabin steward during dinner.  It opened by itself while we were sleeping.
•   Horizon Court entry doors are manned by a wash basin police staffer.
•   Ship sailing speed is now 17 knots.
•   Free medallion net is running slow.
•   Chef’s Table Lumiere is in the middle back of the aft dining room. It is separated from surrounding tables by a curtain on a track.  Cost is $95 per person.  No thank you.
•   Yet another time change at noon today.
•   We received a Princess advisory for our upcoming Morocco stop.  I’m honestly apprehensive about this stop and for that reason booked just a city tour.  It’s Ramadan time and Casablanca is not the place, IMHO, to wander the streets on your own. We closely watched the port lecture and I’m still apprehensive.
•   Tonight’s show is a clean comedian which should be enjoyable.
•   Already had one waiter ask us for a positive review.
•   One passenger at dinner bragged to me that he had a travel router.  Of course I have one as well. The bragger’s wife was so loud that one person got up from our table and left.
•   Chef in Horizon Court told me that there is no Cream-of-Wheat on the ship.  

•   All patters were recalled last night and redistributed this morning.
Change of itinerary?

•   Noticed that the elevators at times are prepositioned to different floors.
Something new? Did it speed up service?

•   Horizon Court entry doors are manned by a wash basin police staffer.
If it's like the Enchanted they only point to the sink

•   Chef’s Table Lumiere is in the middle back of the aft dining room. It is separated from surrounding tables by a curtain on a track.  Cost is $95 per person.  No thank you.
I think we'll skip it also.

•   Tonight’s show is a clean comedian which should be enjoyable.
Only one we saw on the Enchanted was really bad- most were good.

•   Already had one waiter ask us for a positive review.
With the comment cards gone, most crew depend on those reviews.

•   One passenger at dinner bragged to me that he had a travel router.  Of course I have one as well. The bragger’s wife was so loud that one person got up from our table and left.
Another great reason for a table for 2.  ;D

•   Chief in Horizon Court told me that there is no Cream-of-Wheat on the ship.  
Sounds like there running short of supplies.

Sky Princess - day 8 - Madeira, Portugal

Having to post via T-Mobile roaming with tethering in port because “The best WiFi on the sea” has been down for Sky Princess passengers for THREE cursed days.  Even Fitbit watches won’t update the time without the Fitbit app having an Internet connection.

Sky Princess – no passenger Internet days 6-7-8

•   A little after midnight, Friday March 24, all passengers experienced the beginning of a complete loss of Internet.  During the day Friday I visited the Internet Café three times to seek outage  information.  The story was we changed satellites, Princess headquarters knows about the outage, we expect Internet to be back on the last sea day (7 days from now), the ship will put out a notice, and we’ll determine if OBC refund adjustments are appropriate later.  The notice never came but I know from past experience that Madeira (funchal) Portugal on Sunday will have T-Mobile roaming to get email and possibly post this message independently of “the worst WiFi on the sea.”
•   The prices listed on the laundry tally sheet are higher that what is actually changed and then  Elite credited.
•   The continuous dining room music track with the Styx song plays in Horizon Court.
•    There is no passenger library on the Sky Princess.  The ship did schedule a passenger book exchange get-together.
•   Transfer slips are no longer added to the shore excursion envelope.
•   Small hot chocolate in International Café costs $3.54
•   Very loud Irish band played in the Atrium yesterday.  Most days they have seemingly all day dance classes in the atrium.
•   $10 to play the cabin door casino game with the odds being forever in the ship’s favor.
•   Only certain Princess Theater shows have reserved seating.
•   We’ve only had one cast show in a week.
•   In Horizon Court the juice glasses are very small. You can ask for two.  Gun ginger ale was free.
•   Ocean Now cabin delivery food was of poor quality.
•   We were requested to keep our curtains closed all Saturday morning while Dolphin decks were being hosed off.
•   Best seats in the Sky Princess Theater are 12 rows back from the stage.
•   Princess Theater shows now consist of two previously seen entertainers combined into one show.
•   Elite laundry is still 2 day turnaround on this half full ship.
•   Yet another, almost every day, ship time change at noon.
•   So far no ship wide blood drives or helicopter evacuations which is a good thing.

What’s funny is Princess T.P. Is labeled “Double Layer” but is the thinest 1 ply paper ever made.

In conclusion: How Princess can get away with their high priced passenger Internet being out for days with no refund is inexcusable.  Thankfully T-Mobile international cell phone roaming with tethering for no extra cost in ports is now the only way to communicate from the Sky Princess.  Otherwise we are safe and sound as we sail the ocean blue to see new ports. POST CONTINUES ON PAGE TWO OF THIS THREAD.
